Monastery of Saint Riginos

Saint Riginos, bishop of Skopelos who was martyred during the persecution of Christians in the 4th century AD, is the revered patron of the island. The people of Skopelos honor him and seek his help in difficult times, as evidenced by the votive offerings they dedicate to his church.

The monastery of Saint Riginos was built in 1728, according to a marble plaque once found at its entrance, probably on the remnants of an earlier Byzantine monastery. On its western side, one can see the tomb of Saint Riginos: a stone sarcophagus dating to the 4th century AD.

The large cruciform church we see today belongs to the modern era. It was built in 1960 on the site of the old katholikon, a single-nave barrel-vaulted basilica, which was demolished.

The emblematic monastery for Skopelos celebrates on February 25th, the day of the saint's death. The feast and celebration of Saint Riginos gather thousands of pilgrims here from Skopelos, the surrounding islands, and mainland Greece.
