The famous Glossa, the second largest settlement after the Chora, is perched on a slope above the Loutraki harbor on the northwest side of the island.

The emblematic writer Alexandros Papadiamantis from Skiathos, charmed by the picturesque village with its wonderful views, mentions it in his short story “The Nostalgic,” giving it the name "High Village."

The origin of the name Glossa is unclear. Some attribute it to the tongue-shaped cape, while others suggest it is a variation of the word Knossa, the name of the city founded by Minoan settlers of the island. A more recent satirical version claims it comes from the fact that you will "gasping for air - panting" climbing the steps of this amphitheatrically built settlement!

Glossa, like the whole island, has a long history, leaving behind interesting material traces in the surrounding area: ancient fortified farmhouses, Roman baths at Loutraki, and remains of an early Christian basilica at the Monastery of Saint Archangel.

Today, the village houses, two-story with characteristic tiled roofs and wooden balconies, belong to the traditional Macedonian style. Life here remains traditional, with residents maintaining their customs and dialect, and in the village's narrow streets, you can still see women in traditional attire, the "foustanes."
