A stunning, traditional preserved settlement built amphitheatrically in the northern part of the island. Skopelos Town, with its imposing Venetian Castle and tightly embraced white houses with colorful windows descending towards the port, is a postcard-perfect image and a social media favorite. However, to truly experience its charm and feel its atmosphere, you need to explore its picturesque alleys on foot.
The history of the Chora dates back many centuries. It is built on the same site as Peparethos, one of the three ancient cities of the island. While the buildings, public structures, and fortifications of the ancient city have been lost, traces of them remain visible, such as the city walls or the Asclepius sanctuary, the Asclepieion.
There are many attractions here: the Folklore Museum, the Historical Museum – Pavlos Nirvana House, the medieval Venetian fortifications, the Panagitsa of the Tower, and countless other churches lovingly maintained by the Skopelites, preserving their religious tradition.
In fact, everything here is noteworthy: the narrow, cobbled uphill streets, interrupted by wide landings and stairways, the vibrant purple and fuchsia bougainvilleas embracing balconies and freshly whitewashed walls, the charming courtyards of the houses, and the people who greet both friends and strangers with the same warmth. The Chora is the first to welcome you to the island and prepares you, in the most eloquent and enchanting way, for your introduction to the place.
