Monument of Agnontas

In 568 BC, the athlete Agnon of Peparethus finished first in the stadium race (approximately 200 meters) at the 53rd Olympic Games of antiquity. Victory in Olympia, then as now, brought enviable glory to the winner and his homeland. In honor of this Peparethian athlete, one of the villages of Skopelos was named Agnontas. In 2003, as part of the Athens Olympics in 2004, a monument was erected by the Port Authority of Skopelos in the harbor of Agnontas. It depicts the ancient athlete against the backdrop of the kotinos, the olive wreath awarded as a prize to the ancient Olympic champions.
