Monastery of Timios Prodromos (Honorary Forerunner)

One of the oldest and most beloved monasteries to the people of Skopelos, located on a slope of Mount Palouki. The Monastery of Timios Prodromos was founded in 1612 by Hieromonk Symeon. His successor and the second abbot, Hieromonk Philaretos, renovated it in 1721, and he is depicted in the monastery's refectory holding a model of it and offering it to Saint John the Baptist.

For centuries, monks resided in the Monastery of Timios Prodromos, but from the early 20th century, a female monastic community took their place.

This serene and well-preserved monastery, situated on a slope with a stunning view, is worth visiting any time of the year. However, it is especially recommended on its feast day, June 24th, or the previous day, for those who wish to experience an authentic, monastic, prayerful evening service. In the katholikon (main church), in addition to enjoying the liturgy, visitors can admire an ancient gilded wooden iconostasis, as well as remarkable icons and frescoes.

The Monastery of Timios Prodromos was particularly esteemed by Kaisarios Dapontes, a Skopelos-born writer and monk of the 18th century, who wrote in his work "Garden of Graces": “Secondly, the Prodromos, a very honored monastery, As the abode of ascetic fathers and truly a dwelling.”
