Monastery of Agia Varvara (St. Barbara)

This beautiful stone-built monastery with a fortress-like appearance, equally as old as the neighboring Monastery of Timios Prodromos, dominates a slope of Mount Palouki, offering an unparalleled view of the northern coastline of Skopelos and Alonissos. According to tradition, it was founded by Hieromonk Philaretos, the abbot of Timios Prodromos, for his sister to become a nun. According to a foundation inscription, its founding year is considered to be 1648.

The Monastery of Agia Varvara, which celebrates on February 4th, is an ideal destination, whether by car or on foot, for those who want to enjoy the wonderful nature of Skopelos up close.
