Mamma Mia: When Skopelos Welcomed Hollywood
In 2008, Hollywood moved to Skopelos when Universal Pictures decided to film most of the outdoor scenes of the romantic comedy Mamma Mia on the island. The film, starring renowned actors Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, and Colin Firth, brings to the big screen the musical of the same name, which is based on the songs of the Swedish pop group ABBA.
Both the film and the musical achieved massive success. Skopelos became famous in every corner of the world. Beyond its natural beauty—with crystal-clear waters literally touching pine-covered shores—what truly captured the hearts of viewers was the chapel of Agios Ioannis in Kastri, where the romantic and emotional wedding scene was filmed, as well as Kastani Beach, where the film’s love-struck couple swam. Kastani Beach, the steep rock, the picturesque white chapel at the top, its breathtaking location and view, along with the stunning landscapes and waters of Skopelos, have left an unforgettable impression on cinephiles. These iconic spots have attracted countless visitors, both Greek and international, to Skopelos, Kastani Beach, and Agios Ioannis in Kastri.
